The object’s story
Object Description
This postcard contains a humorous handwritten verse asking that a letter be delivered to “G. Lackie” at the Picture Palace in Grangemouth. Describing Lackie as a “bag-pipe coon” and ragtime performer, the message reflects the informal networks of Scotland’s variety entertainment circuit in the years before the First World War.
Note: The postcard contains a historical term that is offensive today but is reproduced here as part of the original document.
Blank on reverse.
Donated by Gwen Whyte, who inherited them from her late aunt, who had been a neighbour of Lackie’s in Balmore Street, Dundee.
Transcription
In GRANGEMOUTH town, that great, grate place
Most grateful I would be
If at the PICTURE PALACE there
You give to G. LACK-IE
This letter. He’s a bag-pipe coon
A rag-time up-to-dater;
He’s just the file to rasp your nerves
You will not want a GRATER.
