Poster advertising the ‘Farewell Levees of General Tom Thumb’. ‘The little General will appear in his various extraordinary performances and costumes, including songs, dances, ancient statues, imitations’.

The poster includes the dates 26-29 January, no year is included. The year can be traced to 1846 when General Tom Thumb appeared in a song and dance performance where he dressed as, amongst others, Napoleon, Frederick the Great and a Scottish Highlander.

Thumb was born Charles Sherwood Stratton (4 January 1838 – 15 July 1883) in Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA. He achieved considerable fame as a performer under the showman P. T. Barnum.

FAREWELL LEVEES OF General Tom Thumb, PREVIOUS TO HIS FINAL DEPARTURE TO AMERICA. Under the patronage of her Majesty, Prince Albert, the Queen Dowager, the King and Queen of the French, the King and Queen of the Belgians, the Emperor of Russia, the Queens of Spain, the Royal Famines and Nobility of England, France, Belgium, and Spain, and visited during the last two years by MORE THAN 2,000,000 PERSONS ! THE Little GENERAL is in fine Health and Spirits, Symmetrical in his Proportions, and has not increased ONE INCH in HEIGHT, nor an OUNCE in WEIGHT since he was seven months old. HE IS 14 YEARS AGE, 25 INCHES HIGH, AND WEIGHS ONLY 15 POUNDS.
The little General will appear in his various EXTRA 1 ORDINARY PERFORMANCES and COSTUMES including Songs, Dances, Ancient Statues, imitations of Napoleon and Frederick the Great. Highland Costume, Citizen’s Dress, and the unique and elegant NEW FRENCH COURT DRESS, Worn before the King, Queen, and Royal Family, at the Tuilleries [sic] and Palace of St Cloud. The magnificent presents received from the first Crowned Heads in the World will be exhibited.
HOURS OF EXHIBITION—11 ½ to 1; 2 ½ to 4; and from 7 to 8 ½
DOORS OPEN HALF AN HOUR PREVIOUS.
ADMISSION, Is—Children under ten, half price.
The General’s Miniature Equipage will promenade the Streets daily.
In order to accommodate the WORKING CLASSES A FOURTH LEVEE (including ALL his Performances) will commence at quarter before Nine o’clock,—the admission to which will be REDUCED to each person SIXPENCE.
