This striking poster advertises the appearance of boxer Jack Johnson, the first Black world heavyweight champion, in the stage revue Seconds Out at Dundee’s King’s Theatre and Hippodrome in January 1916. Promoted as Johnson’s “first appearance as a comedian,” the production blended music, dance, spectacle and celebrity entertainment. The bold red and blue typography reflects the visual energy of early twentieth-century theatre advertising, while also highlighting Johnson’s international fame beyond the boxing ring.
