The object’s story
Object Description
This striking poster advertises a variety bill at Dundee’s King’s Theatre and Hippodrome beginning 31 August 1914, just weeks after the outbreak of the First World War. Headlining the programme was Adele Moraw, billed as “The Gay Parisienne,” alongside performers including Larola, Harry Atkinson, Lily and Alma Mackenzie, Reg Wentworth, Ida Barr, Ray Horman, The Great Sturling, and Les Carancots. Printed in bold red and blue lettering, the poster reflects the colourful and competitive style of early twentieth-century music hall advertising. It also highlights the theatre’s twice-nightly performances and popular entertainment offered to Dundee audiences during a period of profound international uncertainty.
