The history of this location
John Young’s Alhambra opened on 13th July 1898 with a performance of ‘The Lady of Lyons’.
By 1927 the venue was showing cinema screenings alongside more traditional live performances. In 1940 it was converted to a full time cinema, The State Cinema, which it operated as until 1968.
In 1969 Dundee City Council purchased the building and converted it back to a theatre, renaming it the Whitehall Theatre.
The Alhambra’s early years were popularised by theatre performances, pantomimes, and music hall acts.
