The People’s Picture Palace, in Lochee’s Logie Street, opened in November 1910 (‘People’s Picture Palace at Lochee’, The Evening Telegraph and Post, 22 November 1910, p.4). Also known as the B & B People’s Picture House.

Whilst not strictly a music hall, the cinema welcomed several music hall performers to its stage as part of its entertainment.

By 1918 the Palace had a new name – the Oxford Picture House. Film still remained the main entertainment, but concerts and music hall turns still were popular.

By the 1930s the Oxford was known as the Astoria Theatre and it remained with this name, operating primarily as a cinema, until its closure in August 1971. The building was demolished in 1977.

The Palace is worthy of note here as it is mentioned, as the Oxford, in the correspondence (January 1929) of Dundee comedian George ‘Geordie’ Lackie (1886-1947).

“To the picture drome called OXFORD
This letter please convey
Where NOBLE hobly [?] caters
For the people out that way
On the LOCHEE Rd it standeth
Where LACKIE is, they say
Making strides in a kilt
And singing a lilt
Called, “Toora!-ay-ooral-ay-aye”
